The roman period
Evidence of the Roman period includes finds of Roman pottery as well as some remains found during archaeological excavations in the urban centre of Orxeta. The existence of a late Roman settlement on the banks of the river Sella can be linked to the changes that occurred at the end of the period of Romanisation of the Iberian Peninsula and above all with the development of the important Roman centre established in La Vila Joiosa. This was established from the middle of the 1st century BC, and achieved the status of municipium in the year 74 AD under the reign of the emperor Vespasian.
