Contemporary history

In the middle of the 19th century Orxeta was submerged in a process of steady recession due to, among other factors, the scourge of the century’s great epidemics such as cholera. From this time there is an important document, the “Diccionario Geográfico-Estadístico-Histórico de España y sus provincias de ultramar” (1850) (“Geographical-Statistical-Historical Dictionary of Spain and its Overseas Provinces”) by D. Pascual Madoz who presented a detailed picture of the town in the middle of the 19th century. However, thanks to the rapid rise in the tourist industry over the last few years, Orxeta can now boast a wide range of modern facilities and quality services and this, together with its natural setting and privileged cultural heritage, are all important factors for this model of town development.
