It is well known that the term "museum" that we commonly use today has had various different meanings and uses throughout history.
Along with the development of new computer and communications technology, especially the internet, new concepts have emerged such as "Virtual Museums".
A virtual museum can be defined as a place, generated by computer technology, where environments of synthesised images are produced, that create a simulated reality. This can provide a number of important advantages with respect to traditional museums:
· By overcoming the limits of physical space, bringing together and organising in a single location a large range of diverse cultural evidence.
· It can introduce cultural and natural heritage to everyone, including those people that for various reasons are unable to physically access it.
· It provides a wide level of user interaction and participation.
· It creates a cultural space of diffusion and investigation, a source of cultural, educational and investigational resources.
For this reason Orxeta's Virtual Museum has been created. It is an initiative of Orxeta Council's Municipal Service of Archaeology and Heritage and aims to serve as a platform for investigation and the preservation of the values, the culture, the history and the unique characteristics of Orxetan society.
