Immaterial Heritage

Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The "Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage" organised by the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris 2003 defined Intangible or Living Cultural Heritage as "the practices, representations, expressions, as well as the knowledge and skills - together with the tools, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces in which they are inherent - that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognise as part of their cultural heritage" and which Intangible Cultural Heritage is manifested, among others, in the following domains:

- Oral traditions and expressions including language as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage.

- Performing art.

- Social practices, rituals and festive events.

- Knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe.

- Traditional craftsmanship.

Therefore, the intangible properties of the Valencian Ethnographic Heritage, according to the Valencian Cultural Heritage Law 4/98 consist of "the activities, knowledge, uses and techniques which represent traditional culture".
